Dr. Stajich earned a B.S. in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Genetics & Genomics, both from Duke University, and performed postdoctoral training at the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Stajich uses computational and evolutionary genomics approaches to study microbial evolution and ecology with a focus on Fungi. His research spans interactions of Fungi with plants, animals, Bacteria and mycoviruses. The research uses culturing and metagenomic approaches to isolate and characterize Fungi and Bacteria from diverse environments from dryland biological soil crusts to Antarctic rocks. His lab also studies phytobiomes of trees impacted by diseases including citrus and avocado. The work in Stajich lab also includes development and improvement of software and reproducible pipelines for genome annotation and metagenomic analysis and interpretation. Dr. Stajich is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Mycological Society of America, and of the American Academy of Microbiology.
